And, finally, some good baseball news.

Wrigley windscreens shelved for year

CINCINNATI — In what could be interpreted as a peace gesture, the Cubs have decided not to reinstall the controversial Wrigley Field windscreens this season, team sources said.

The "windscreens" were these huge walls of black plastic (think garbage bags) that were set up behind the fans in the bleacher seats, so the people in the apartment buildings across the street from the stadium, and on the roofs of those buildings couldn’t see what was going on. Management said it was both to prevent those people from "stealing their product", and for security reasons. Exactly what security big swathes of garbage bag plastic offered was never revealed.

As long as I can remember, there were people watching games from the rooftops across the street from the stadium. Lately, people have started selling tickets to seats on top of the roofs, and… I dunno. The Tribune Company (who owns the Cubs) just went out of their heads that someone that wasn’t them was making a dime off Cubs games.

In any case, this year, the windscreens are gone, and baseball’s playing again at Wrigley.

Except today, of course. Home opener’s been snowed out. Whoops.

    Snowed out. In April.
Yet another reason I’m glad I don’t live ::waves hand dismissively:: UP THERE.
