This is a Netflix entry, that I started at the end of December. Here it is, the beginning of March, and I've only watched one of the twenty discs that make up the next 20 list.

Suffice it to say, if I didn't have time to write this entry, I haven't had time to watch the movies, either. Things have been busy.

WoW

Tycho speaks truth.

Part of the reason I quit World of Warcraft ... was also that the style of my play had become something I no longer enjoyed. There is a very mechanistic way to go about your business in WoW that is deeply counter to my nature. I like discovering my entertainment via an intuitive process, and it seemed to me that the game was essentially "about" running Molten Core over and over again to get a complete set of of numerically maximal lootz. I could see this point approaching, like the bright eye of an onrushing locomotive, and decided that I would rather slam my dick in a car door.

I'm not quitting... but that "the game begins at level 70" bullshit is just that.

McCain - Just Another Politician

Back in the crazy year of 2000, when John McCain was running for the Republican nominee for president, he had an air about him that maybe he was a politician who could work with both the left and the right, someone whose beliefs could be appreciated by both sides of the aisle.

He lost, of course. And, now, is running for the 2008 nomination. And has learned his lesson by lurching hard to the right. The latest development is that not only will he be giving an address to a leading creationist advocacy group, but his going back on his statement that intelligent design shouldn't be taught in schools. So much for only teaching science in science class, eh?

John McCain, turns out we did hardly know you.

Singing Songbird

This is interesting, and could be quite cool.

I meant to blog about this a while ago, but forgot. Thanks to a post on Daring Fireball, I've been reminded about Songbird.

Essentially, and poorly summarized, it's like combining Firefox (web browsing), and iTunes (playing media/music).

For a good summary, watch the Songbird Screencast. Very, very interesting. And, with 0.2.5, it'll play songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store, and also protected Windows Media files.

I've talked about this before, but now I actually have URLs and such to hand out, so... I'm handing them out.

On St. Patrick's Day, I will be having my head shaved to raise money to fight childhood cancer.

I know post-Christmas is a great time to hit people up for money, but if you can't give anything, consider spreading the word (for word, read: URL)? I've set a modest donation goal, because I'm extremely uncomfortable asking people for money (yeah, I did great in school fundraisers), but this is a really important cause, and compared to a kid who has cancer, my stupid little quirks mean precisely dick.

So... yeah. Thanks!

Netflix-o-rama

I'm late! I'm late! I actually got the first DVD of the next twenty from my Netflix queue earlier this week, but I've been so sucked in by Warcraft (yeah, yeah, I hear you snickering. Laugh it up, fuzzball) that I haven't gotten around to writing this post, although I did the URL gathering a while ago, in preparation. I should note the preparation was pre-WoW. In fact, I did it so long ago I had to redo it, as one title dropped out of my queue to the unavailable list (8MM), so I had to remove that and add the last movie onto the list.

That said, on to the movies...

New Computer

The new computer has a small camera built in. It comes with an program called Photo Booth, to take pictures with that camera. Photo Booth comes with the ability to apply all sorts of effects to the pictures it's taking.

One of the more amusing set of effects are the funhouse mirror style effects.

Just to note for posterity, on Monday Penny did her first repeated "Why?" conversation.

Precisely what I've been looking forward to. Although today, on the way home, when we started down the road of why summer and why hot, I ended up talking for a while about hydrogen atoms fusing into helium, and the energy from the reaction giving off light and heat, and by the time I was done, either Penny had gotten bored and stopped listening to me, or had lost the train of the conversation. I doubt that tactic will work for much longer.
