This is a Netflix entry, that I started at the end of December. Here it is, the beginning of March, and I've only watched one of the twenty discs that make up the next 20 list.
Suffice it to say, if I didn't have time to write this entry, I haven't had time to watch the movies, either. Things have been busy.
Anyway. The discs.
Angel, Season 2
Obviously, I liked Season One well enough to continue on to Season 2. I think Liz is more-or-less with me on this. I thought it'd be great to have these hour-sized (less, even, taking out the commercials) chunks of stuff to watch once the baby arrived. And then the baby, and the DVD arrived, and I had a nerd seizure and decided I wanted to wait until the concurrent season of Buffy arrived via Liz's queue. Remember what I said above about movie watching frequency? Yeah. We're still sitting, waiting for Buffy to show up.
A Mighty Wind
The one movie from the list I've managed to watch so far! Made by the same crew who did This Is Spinal Tap!, this mockumentary focuses around folk music, and is much gentler and kinder to its main characters than the hard rock version. So, while it's funny, it lacks the bite that made Spinal Tap and Waiting for Guffman so funny.
Best in Show
Another movie by the Spinal Tap crew, this one about dog shows, and the people who populate them.
Bill Hicks Live
No IMDB details at all? Not even a cast? Hmph. I may enter a fair number of IMDB details once I actually watch it. Anyway. Bill Hicks is a comedian who died in 1994 of pancreatic cancer. And he was viciously, viciously funny.
Eddie Izzard: Unrepeatable
Eddie Izzard is another hilarious stand-up comedian, differing from Bill Hicks in that Izzard is British, alive, and a transvestite. So, they're hard to mistake for each other. Still. Very funny.
Eddie Izzard: Definite Article
Also, Liz finds Eddie Izzard very funny, and I think she could take-or-leave Bill Hicks. That's okay.
Eddie Izzard: Circle
So, at some point, we saw an Eddie Izzard special on TV, and Liz decided she really liked him, and I think I was still putting movies into my queue for her, so I dumped all this Eddie Izzard in here for her. And it's finally bubbled up to the top.
Ray
I put this in my queue when it was out in the theater, getting rave reviews. Jamie Foxx got a Best Actor award! So, yeah, really far behind on things.
Raging Bull
Fortunately, I did not put this in my queue when it was in theaters. Probably because this came out in 1980. I have high hopes for the DeNiro/Scorcese classic.
The Specials
A superhero comedy! "They may not be top-tier heroes, but The Specials are nevertheless blessed with special powers. And yet, they languish in frustrating mediocrity. Meet the group's leader, Strobe (Thomas Haden Church), and the rest of the pack -- including the Weevil (Rob Lowe), Ms. Indestructible (Paget Brewster), Amok (Jamie Kennedy), Deadly Girl (Judy Greer), Minute Man (James Gunn) and Nightbird (Jordan Ladd) -- as they pursue superstardom."
I wish I remember what specifically brought this to my attention to put it in my queue, but I don't. Alas.
Seconds
Sometimes, I put things in my queue for reasons that are less than savory. Netflix had been recommending Seconds to me off and on for a while (sci-fi movie about a company that provides a schlub with a new body and a new life), and I was sort of half interested in it, but not enough to put it in my queue... and then I found out it was the movie that contributed to Beach Boy Brian Wilson's insanity. Less than savory. But a heck of a story. (don't read too much of the article, it starts to spoil the movie.)
Eddie Izzard: Glorious
Who's this Izzard guy who keeps popping up?
Affliction
Again, no idea what pushed this over the edge from "somewhat interested" to "adding to the queue." But I do really like James Coburn. Nick Nolte plays himself as an alcoholic small-town sheriff. Kidding! Kidding!
Life Stinks
At some point, I realized I'd seen most of the Mel Brooks movies... except Life Stinks. Which is rated rather poorly. But... argh. Damn this sense of wanting completeness!
I Heart Huckabees
Saw the trailer, thought it looked absolutely goofy, added it to queue.
And, for the random statistics, currently I have 268 movies in my queue, and the last five are Gone Baby Gone, No Country for Old Men, High Anxiety, Southland Tales, and Wristcutters: A Love Story.
